DEADLINE TO REGISTER: BY MIDNIGHT, FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT (JUNE 29)

In light of the global pandemic, we are cautiously proceeding, allowing a small number of participants at each event. We will need your cooperation in only signing up for events you can truly commit to attending. If you miss out on registering please get yourself registered on the waitlist. We also ask for everyone's cooperation and patience as we all adjust! Please see our policy and safety practices here.

The Mantario is a popular wilderness thru-hike along the Manitoba-Ontario border, known for its varied terrain and beautiful lakes. For the purposes of this activity, we will hike from the North Trailhead to Hemenway Lake where we will camp overnight. If you're looking to build-up your hiking and backcountry camping experience before attempting a full thru-hike, this is the hike for you!

Appropriate gear is MANDATORY for participation in this activity. Please refer to this sample packing list prior to registering; a complete packing list will be provided to registered participants. A Manitoba Parks pass is also required; a reminder that it must be purchased online this year.

Event leader: Jessica Burtnick with Reggie the Siberian husky.

There will be a dog accompanying this hike. If you don’t have a dog or puppy friend of your own, this is a great opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of an animal companion! If you are uncomfortable around or allergic to dogs, we highly recommend you check out one of our other upcoming hikes as this hike may not be the right fit for you.

Arrival Time: by 10:00 AM. We will begin the hike no later than 10:30 AM. The time arranged allows for you to have time to attend to personal needs such as organizing your gear and for the leader to share information with the group.

LocationWe will meet at the Mantario Hiking Trail - North Trailhead in Whiteshell Provincial Park.

Overall Difficulty Rating: Due to the factors mentioned below, this activity is rated a 3/5.

This rating is subject to change based on prevailing conditions at the time of the activity, including but not limited to weather.

Duration/Distance: 18.2 km return (out-and-back). This trail takes about 3.5 hours each way.
Experience: This is a beginner-friendly activity. You need to have good physical fitness and endurance, and previous backcountry camping experience. You must also have the ability to walk with the group at a steady, slow to moderate pace for the duration of the activity while carrying all your gear (~30-40 lbs). We will stop for lunch, as well as water and rest breaks. There are no services at the trailhead or campsite.
Terrain: This section of trail along the north and east shores of Big Whiteshell Lake traverses thick forest and is subject to flooding; expect conditions to be wet, muddy and potentially slippery and plan accordingly. There are multiple small creek crossings, two with bridges, and areas of exposed rock along the shoreline.
Pace: This activity will be at a steady, slow to moderate pace.
